On January 28, 2026, at 4:02 pm, the Rye Fire Department was dispatched to a reported fire on the roof of Aurora Restaurant. The flames were quickly contained before they could get out of hand.
According to city officials, units arrived within 60 seconds to find everyone safely evacuated. Firefighters located the fire on the roof at the rear of the building. They opened and removed sections of roofing materials to reach the flames. Once a clearing was created, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it could cause any major damage.
The Rye Police Department assisted by closing a portion of Purchase Street and managing traffic. Harrison and Purchase Fire Departments provided resources to cover additional calls in the Rye area. All units were returned to service by 5:35 pm.
The blaze started when someone attempted to remove ice from the roof and gutter area.
