In early February, the 2025 Grammys generated backlash from the media due to several memorable moments at the ceremony. From the dramatic and unexpected arrival of Kanye West and Bianca Censori to Beyonce’s Album of the Year win and beyond, the 2025 Grammys was far from uneventful and has been labeled controversial by many audiences.
When Kanye West and Bianca Censori appeared seemingly uninvited on the red carpet, they surely made a statement. While West showed up wearing an all-black outfit consisting of trousers, sunglasses, and a t-shirt, Censori opted for a less understated look. The model arrived in a large fur coat that revealed a sheer, almost nonexistent dress underneath. Since there has been no confirmation from the Recording Academy regarding whether the couple was truly invited to the ceremony, it appears West and Censori were simply trying to steal the much-desired spotlight. After their brief appearance, many questioned if Censori’s outfit crossed the line of public decency and could be punishable by law as indecent exposure. Following their quick walk down the red carpet, many speculate that the couple was escorted out by security officials. However, others claim that West and Censori simply walked the carpet, got into their own car, and left willingly. While the details of their presence remain unclear, Kanye West and Bianca Censori’s appearance at the Grammys gained a spotlight across social media platforms.
The awards ceremony also sparked controversy as top nominees for Grammys, including Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift, left the event empty-handed; instead, Beyonce’s Cowboy Carter earned Album of the Year and Best Country Album. Kendrick Lamar also secured Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Not Like Us.” While these songs and albums were undoubtedly achievements that deserved celebration, audiences questioned whether they should take the award over other prominent albums. According to Tribune, Billie Eilish was nominated for “seven awards, including Album of the Year for Hit Me Hard and Soft and Record of the Year for ‘Birds of a Feather.’” Eilish “was considered a frontrunner” for Album of the Year, even performing her hit “Birds of Feather” at the ceremony. Additionally, Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department was nominated for six awards but also left without a single win. The artists themselves even seemed surprised. When Album of the Year was announced, Eilish held back tears as Beyonce’s husband and daughter encouraged a shocked Beyonce to walk to the stage. These unexpected results left some spectators enraged, sparking serious controversy on platforms including X and Instagram.
In reaction to such controversy, an article by the Independent acknowledges that these unexpected results may also be an “apology to snubbed artists” in many ways. In the past, pop music and white, mainstream artists have dominated major categories while black artists and categories such as R&B, hip hop, and Latin have been forgotten. Before this year, Beyonce had been snubbed in many major categories despite her success as an artist, instead being acknowledged in smaller, genre-based categories. In 2023, Beyonce’s Renaissance lost to Harry Styles’s Harry’s House for the Best Album award. While the winners of these awards are surely talented and deserving in many ways, frustrated spectators wonder if the 2025 Grammys were an apology to artists who may have been left shorthanded in the past. From West and Censori’s appearance to the unexpected losses of Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, and beyond, the 2025 Grammy was undoubtedly one to remember.
